It”s not something we like to think about, but there are people out there who like hurting children. We can take the appropriate steps to protect our children, but when it comes down to it, it”s sometimes out of our control. We have to hope we taught them well enough to not do something that can put them in danger.
Last March, two young girls proved that their parents taught them well and then some. Their instincts helped them stay out of danger. Not only that, but then they went above and beyond in order to put a criminal behind bars.
In 2013, a 12-year-old girl from Glenpool, Oklahoma, was forced into a car by a man she didn”t know. She was then taken to another location where she was sexually assaulted and then dropped off back in her neighborhood. A suspect was never produced until the man tried the scam again, this time pulling up to a lemonade stand run by two different girls.
The man bought a cup of lemonade and sipped it. He told the girls that they were doing a good job, but they could make a lot more money if they came with him and took some pictures in a studio. Frightened, the girls refused.
The man handed the girls his empty cup. They were hesitant to reach for it because they were afraid he would grab them. He placed the cup on the table and left. With the help of their grandmother, the girls brought the cup to the police satiation, where DNA testing confirmed this was the same man who abducted the 12-year-old in Glenpool.
Recently, police arrested a man by the name of Kevin Smith for possessing 290 images and 140 videos of child pornography on his computer. His DNA matched with the lemonade cup and the Glennpool abduction. Although he still awaits a trial date for the abduction, Smith will already face 17 and a half years in prison for the child pornography, a $25,000 fine and another $1,000 to be paid to victims of child porn.
While this is obviously a troubling story to hear as a parent, it is nice to know that the bad guy got what he deserved, thanks to brave kids like these two girls from Tulsa.
