The Future Is Now, And It’s Kind Of Scary: Google Patents Robots With Personalities

This is the past:

This is the past:

We wanted you to see a robot struggling with his existence before you read this new terrifying reality. Hopefully you always remember we can destroy an army of Artificial Intelligence bots bent on destroying mankind.

Google has been awarded a patent for the “methods and systems for robot personality development.” The process is outlined by Google in which personalities are downloaded from the cloud to “provide states or moods representing transitory conditions of happiness, fear, surprise, perplexion, thoughtfulness, derision and so forth.” What about… love? Can robots love, Google? Without a heart in their tin can chest can they still love? Sorry, got carried away there.

It’s not a process for personalized robots (at least, probably not yet,) but there will be a set of personality traits that are transferred between different robots. The patent states:

The personality and state may be shared with other robots so as to clone this robot within another device or devices… In this manner, a user may travel to another city, and download within a robot in that city (another ‘skin’) the personality and state matching the user’s ‘home location’ robot. The robot personality thereby becomes transportable or transferable.

So, in layman’s terms, these personalities can be spread like a bad STD. Of course, this is the future, so we can just worry about it for now instead of facing it head on, when an evil robot virus is spread to all the other robots and tells them to “destroy all humans.”

Google is probably just calling “dibs” on something they don’t have the ability to make yet. But always remember this fear you feel. Great minds like Elon Musk, Bill Gates, and Stephen Hawking all voiced concern about when AI overcome humanity’s intellectual capacity.
