14-year-old Maggie Gleason was born without cochleas, leaving her deaf since birth. She never experienced some of the things many of us take for granted, like hearing our parent”s voice. This was all about to change for the young girl with help from a new technology.
Thanks to hearing specialists at University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, Maggie could finally hear her father when he asked her a simple question: “Maggie, can you hear me?” The emotional moment happened seconds after doctors turned on an innovative electronic device called an auditory brainstem implant, an implanted device that provides a sense of sound to a person who is profoundly deaf.
If you are wondering how Maggie understood what her father said if she never heard any spoken language before, it”s because she can both read lips and her father signed what he said at the same time.
