Last June, Joe Phillips-Garcia, a young boy in British Columbia, had a very real brush with death. After a family picnic, he and some of his cousins hopped in their truck…two days later, he came out as the only human survivor.
And it”s all thanks to this guy, Sako.
Joe and Sako had always been close, like family.
But Joe would never have guessed that Sako would be solely responsible for keeping him alive.
After a family picnic just like this, Joe caught a ride home with his cousins.
He was sleepy from a day in the sun, so he began to fall asleep in the back of the truck.
The next thing he knew, he felt the vehicle careening down a steep drop.
For two days, Joe lay helpless on the forest floor with multiple serious injuries.
Thankfully, Sako survived the crash, too.
The resilient, loyal dog kept Joe warm at night…
He even fought off coyotes, who could have made easy prey of the injured boy.
Right when Joe was about to give up on life, park rangers found him and got him to the hospital.
Rangers say that without Sako”s warmth and protection, Joe probably wouldn”t have made it out alive.
That”s why this hero pup is being inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame!

I can”t imagine what those long hours must have been like for these two…but what matters most is that this dog knew exactly what he had to do to keep Joe and himself alive. What a truly incredible and touching story.
