When two fawns were born in Darius Sasnauskas’ backyard, near Yellowstone National Park, it was a truly joyous occasion. But when tragedy struck soon thereafter, leaving one baby with a broken leg, joy turned to horror as it was abandoned by its mother when it couldn’t keep up. That’s when Sasnauskas stepped in to fulfill the role this fawn’s mother couldn’t in the wild.
What happened next made me reach for more than a few tissues.
When he first saw them being born, Sasnauskas felt an immediate attachment. After all, how could you not love this adorable little one?
But after her mom left her behind, he had to make an important decision: let nature take its course or step in?
The kind man brought her inside — despite protestations from the cats.
He even fashioned a cast from an oatmeal container!
The hungry little girl had to eat every four hours.
With all the time she was spending indoors, one of Sasnauskas’ dogs, Mack, took a liking to her!
And after some time, a miracle happened…the baby learned how to walk properly again!
A proponent of releasing her back into the wild, he tried to set her free a number of times.
But no matter how determined he was, she always returned with him.
Then one evening, the fawn’s mother returned and the baby rejoined her family!
A few months later, Sasnauskas spotted his former patient living with her family and loving life, all thanks to him.

That’s what we call a job well done, sir!
